Breast Ultrasound
Breast ultrasound is a fantastic diagnostic tool which can help differentiate between solid and cystic lumps and distinguish between healthy and abnormal breast tissue. It isn’t however intended to be used as a replacement to conventional breast screening services for the exclusion of breast cancer. For anyone (Female or Male) over forty years of age, a mammogram should be carried out PRIOR to breast ultrasound, to fully assess the entire breast tissues and rule out small incidental cancers. This is why our service is aimed primarily at the age group of 18-40 years old.
Our clinics will run on a Monday afternoon/evening from 4:30-7:30pm twice a month, with the next two sessions scheduled for Monday 01st and 15th December.
Is a Breast Ultrasound Scan appropriate for your concern?
The primary aim of this scan is to assess palpable (can be felt) lumps and focal pain in the breast. We can aspirate/drain painful cysts and rule out sinister reasons for lumps and pain.
At Ultrasound Scan Clinic, we prioritise transparency with our service users. While ultrasound of the breast is extremely useful, it cannot make a diagnosis of cancer without triple assessment. Triple assessment involves 1 - Clinical examination, 2 – Imaging, and 3 Biopsy.
If you have been to your GP and have been told that you are on the regional waiting list, please do not cancel this appointment.
Whilst a GP referral is not essential prior to booking an appointment with us, it may be beneficial to speak with them in advance to see if they feel an ultrasound assessment would be beneficial to you.
If you are under 40 and have any of the symptoms below, we can help!
-Breast cyst ( you may have had fluid drained previously)
-Defined lump with pain
-Mobile lump (moves around with the breast)
-Nodularity or asymmetry
-Focal pain/discomfort
-Clear nipple discharge
-Skin lesion on breast or in the axilla (armpit)
If you have been advised that you have a higher risk of breast cancer please consult your GP prior to making an appointment.
If you have a bloody discharge from the nipple, redness or heat of the skin, dimpling or deformity of the breast you will require a triple assessment at the NHS breast clinic, please see your GP as our service may not be the most appropriate pathway for you.
If you are over 70 years old and have no symptoms you can still make an appointment with your local breast screening centre to have a mammogram. This will give a more complete overview of what is happening in both breasts.
This is a 30 minute appointment priced at £180. Within this appointment ultrasound will be used to assess the breast tissues in detail including an assessment of the skin layers and axilla. All findings will be demonstrated and discussed with you.
An immediate small hard copy report will be provided to you at the end of your appointment for your own record keeping. We can also forward you an official branded report (via email or post, whichever your preference) for you to present to your appropriate healthcare provider if necessary.
Please note we cannot provide breast biopsies with this service.
